Version 1.0 · effective 25 October 2026

Ferry licence

The same licence you accept in the Ferry installer.

Short version (not legally binding)

  • This public beta of Ferry is free for private and business use, writing included. After the beta, reading stays free and writing needs a paid licence. Selling Ferry is not allowed.
  • Writing to Mac drives is off until you turn it on in Settings. Back up first: if something goes wrong, data on the drive can be lost.
  • Ferry sends no telemetry. When it starts and every hour it downloads a small update file, which can also switch writing off in a version with a serious bug.
  • There is no warranty. Ferry is made by one person, not a company.

1. Who

These terms are an agreement between you and Nicolas Ondráš, a private individual in the Czech Republic (contact: [email protected]). They cover Ferry, its installer and its updates. By installing or using Ferry you accept them.

2. Use

Ferry is in public beta. You may use the beta versions free of charge, writing included, on any number of computers, for any purpose, including in a business. Reading Mac drives will stay free in later versions; writing in versions after the beta will need a one-time paid licence, under the terms those versions show. I give the beta away as a private person, not as part of a business.

3. Passing it on

You may pass on the unmodified official installer, free of charge. You may not sell Ferry, charge for it, modify or repackage it, wrap it in an installer with ads, remove its notices, or present it as your own. You may reverse engineer Ferry only where the law allows it (for example EU Directive 2009/24/EC) or as the LGPL licence of the Dokany component permits (see the third-party notices).

4. Writing and backups

Writing to Mac drives is off by default. To turn it on you confirm that you have a backup; Ferry records that confirmation (time, version and wording) in %ProgramData%\Ferry\config.ini. You are responsible for your data and for backing it up. You write at your own risk: keep a current backup of everything important on the drive, and try writing with unimportant files first. Do not use Ferry where a failure could cause injury or serious harm.

5. Updates

When it starts, every hour while it runs, and when you click “Check for updates”, Ferry downloads update.json from https://ferryfs.app (see the Privacy Policy). It says whether a newer version exists, and it can switch writing off in a version with a known serious bug; your drives then stay readable. Each version writes for 90 days after its release; after that it mounts drives read-only until you update. I am not obliged to provide updates or support.

6. No warranty

Ferry is provided “as is”, without any warranty, to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law. I try hard to keep it free of bugs, but no software is free of errors, and I do not promise that Ferry works with every drive, macOS version or Windows setup. New versions of macOS and Windows can bring changes an older Ferry does not know about, so keep Ferry up to date.

7. Liability

You keep your own backups (section 4), so I am not liable for lost or damaged data, nor for other damage or lost profits, as far as the law allows. This does not limit liability that the law does not allow to be limited: for intent and gross negligence, for a defect I knew about and did not warn about, for harm to life or health, and under mandatory product liability law. If you are a consumer, you keep the rights the law of your country gives you and that cannot be waived.

8. Trademarks

Apple, Mac, macOS, APFS and FileVault are trademarks of Apple Inc. Ferry is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple.

9. Law

Czech law applies, without the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. Consumers also keep the protection of the country where they live and may go to court there. New versions of these terms apply only to the Ferry versions that show them. If a part is invalid, the rest still applies.
